E-Blocks IrDA/IR Transmitter/Receiver US$30.00

E-Blocks IrDA/IR Transmitter/Receiver

This is a downstream E-blocks peripheral module, designed to be controlled by one of the upstream E-blocks processing boards which are available in a variety of MCU/CPLD architectures.

IrDA-compatible receiver/transmitter for E-blocks systems

This E-block allows to add IrDA functionality to any microcontroller that features a standard UART. Equipped with MCP2120 and MCP2150 IrDA encoders/decoders this board can be used for "point to point" applications with other IrDA-equipped devices, such as PDAs, notebooks and mobile phones, or it can be used as a stand-alone IrDA Encoder/Decoder.

The option to bypass the board's IrDA encoders/decoders and to directly access the board's infrared transceiver allows you to use this board also for other, non-IrDA, infrared applications (e.g. IR remote controls).

The board offers a range of user selectable baud rates. A set of jumpers allow this IrDA E-block to used with a large variety of PIC microcontrollers with a UART interface. Solderable patch connections on the board allow you to adapt it for other microcontrollers.

Macros for the Flowcode flowchart programming software allow for easy use of the complex IrDa function with this software package.

MCP2150 IrDA Encoder/Decoder

The MCP2150 is compatible with the Physical layer of the IrDA standard. Therefore, this device uses six main I/Os, which are: RX, TX, CTS, RTS, TXIR and RXIR. RXIR and TXIR are the input or output from the serial infrared sensor. RX and TX are the communication to and from the UART of a controlling device, such as a PIC microcontroller. CTS and RTS are used as hardware flow control when communicating.

MCP2120 IrDA Encoder/Decoder

The MCP2120 uses only the bottom layer of the IrDA protocol, and is therefore used as a stand alone Infrared Decoder/Encoder. The MCP2120 device only uses the RX, TX, RXIR and TXIR I/Os as described above. Thus there is no need to implement hardware flow control at this level of the IrDA standard. This makes its operation quick and easy to use.

IrDA Baud Rates

Both the MCP2120 and the MCP2150 have individual clocks that are user selectable via jumpers. The MPC2120 supports baud rates of 9600, 19200, 38400 and 57600. The MPC2150 supports baud rates of 9600, 19200, 57600 and 115200.

Other IR Applications

This E-block can also be used for prototyping other, non IrDA, IR applications, such as a TV remote control or a remote control receiver. To use this e-block as a generic IR transceiver, disable both the MPC2150 and MPC2120 devices by setting jumper J2 to “none” and connecting the TXIR and RXIR signals on J10 to the appropriate port pins on the P2 patch block.

E-Blocks Overview

E-Blocks are small circuit boards each of which contains a block of electronics that you would typically find in an electronic system. Each E-Block performs a separate function as either an input sub-system, an output sub-system, an input/output sub-system or a processing sub-system.

E-Blocks can be put together to form a variety of systems that can be used for teaching and learning electronics, and for the rapid prototyping of complex electronic systems.

Each E-Block has one or more 9-way D-type connectors that provide up to eight input/output lines and a ground line. These D-type connectors allow connection between E-Blocks to be made in buses of multiples of 8 lines, just like a real electronic system. Power is routed separately to those E-Blocks that need it.

Processing E-Blocks based on PIC, dsPIC, ARM or AVR microcontrollers control the whole E-Blocks system. Processing E-Blocks provide up to five input/output ports with up to eight lines per port.

Please see the E-Blocks Category for a list of available components. For more details on E-Blocks, see the E-Blocks User Guide (in English, French, German and Spanish) or watch the Introduction to E-Blocks video.
