Easy8051 v6 System for AT89 in DIP/PLCC, with AT89S8253, ICSP

The Easy8051 v6 development system is a fully contained board for designing and testing 8051 projects using the AT89 family of microcontrollers from Atmel. It has several MCU sockets for various chip packages: DIP14 (two pinouts), DIP16, DIP20, DIP28, DIP40, PLCC32, and PLCC44. An AT89S8253 MCU in DIP40 is included.

Never install more than one chip at a time!

This system includes an on-board programmer that connects to your PC via USB cable. Many devices are on the board (or can be). It has space for a 12864 graphical LCD (optional) and for an alphanumeric 216 LCD (optional). It has a 216 non-backlit display, a 44 keypad, and port expansion for add-on modules.

Note: The picture shows the two optional displays (with blue backgrounds) plugged into the board for illustration purposes. See the Optional Recommended Products list at the bottom of this page to add those displays to your order.

8051 Development Board Features

What's on board
CPU sockets The board has several DIP and PLCC sockets for various AT89 microcontrollers. An AT89S8253 is included in the 40-pin DIP socket.
mikroProg The USB 2.0 Programmer is driven by a single USB port on a PC. No additional AC power adapter is needed. The programmer is recognized by Windows (certified for XP, Vista and 7), which simplifies the driver installation. It is specifically designed for In-Circuit Serial Programming (ICSP), so it only supports 8051 MCUs which use SPI lines for programming. This USB programmer doesn't use a bootloader or any similar software for programming; the whole 8051 memory and all pins are available.
Port expander On-board 16-bit MCP23S17 I/O port expander uses SPI communication.
Serial LCD 216 display uses SPI communication to display text messages. This display does not have a backlight.
RS232 port RS232 communication with a PC or other microcontroller is performed via DB9F connector.
DIP switches The system can be configured easily by means of DIP switches. Each DIP switch configures one part of the system.
DS1820 socket A socket is provided for installing a Dallas DS1820 digital temperature sensor which can measure from -55C to +125C (see options below to add a sensor to your order).
4-digit, 7-segment display This multiplexed LED display allows you to display four digits and decimal points.
A/D converter An MCP3204 ADC with a potentiometer allows you to test multiple analog inputs.
Power input The board can be powered either by the USB programming connector or through an external barrel jack (9-32V DC or 7-23V AC). A jumper allows you to set which input to use, and a power switch allows you to turn the system off.
Voltage reference VREF for ADC can be set to VCC (5V) or 4.096V.
Expansion ports The board has five 25-pin headers for access to I/O ports, plus two more headers connected to the port expander.
PORT0 ~ PORT4 I/O For each of these I/O ports, the board includes 25 male pin headers, DIP switches to enable pull-up or pull-down resistors on any desired port pin, a push button on each port pin, and an SMD LED on each port pin (that's 38 buttons and 38 LEDs). Through the port expander, two more 25 headers and 16 more LEDs are on board too. Some buttons are duplicated in 44 keypad and menu-navigation configurations.
216-character LCD connector A connector and spacer is provided for adding an additional backlit alphanumeric display. You can purchase a display using the options below.
12864-pixel GLCD connector A connector and spacer also is provided for a graphical LCD. You can purchase a graphical display using the options below. Note however that this board does not have a touchpanel controller.
GLCD/LCD contrast control Three potentiometers allow you to control the contrast of the on-board LCD and the optional GLCD and LCD individually.
Button voltage level The voltage level to be applied when a button is pressed (GND or 5V) can be set by a jumper.
Reset button The reset circuit is connected to the MCLR pin of the microcontroller.
Silkscreen All pins and switch functions are silkscreened on both the front and back of the PCB.

  • AT89S51, AT89S52, AT89S52E, AT89S53

Software Examples

The included DVD-ROM contains the following example software, both as ready-to-load compiled code and as source code written in C, BASIC and Pascal. Demo versions of mikroElektronika's compilers for 8051 (with 2K size limit) are included too. The source codes provide detailed explanatory comments. Note that some of the demos require optional hardware, e.g. the LCDs and temperate sensor.

The board ships with a USB cable, printed documentation, and a DVD that has drivers, the 8051Flash software, example code, and demo versions of the mikroC, mikroBASIC and mikroPascal compilers for 8051.
