mbed NXP LPC1768 (Cortex M3) CPU Module, 40-pin DIP

The mbed LPC1768 Development board puts the microcontroller onto a 40-pin DIP PCB to provide easy access to most of the microcontroller's I/Os and built-in peripherals. Plug the 40-pin DIP module into the optional mbed-Xpresso Baseboard or a breadboard and you have a powerful development and prototyping platform.

The mbed Microcontroller Module comes in a 40-pin, 0.1" pitch DIP form-factor so it's ideal for experimenting on breadboards, stripboards and PCBs. It supports USB, SPI, I2C CAN, Ethernet, and UART interfaces. Downloading programs is as simple as using a USB Flash Drive: Connect the mbed module via the miniUSB connection to your PC; the PC will recognize the module as a USB Flash drive; drag & drop your program binary to the FlashDrive and you're up and running!

The mbed Compiler is web-based, so it works on Mac, Windows, and Linux, and it allows you to write programs in C++. You'll also have access to the mbed libraries, which give you an API-driven approach to using the many functions of the microcontroller.

Also included is a C/C++ SDK for productive high-level programming of peripherals. Combined with the wealth of libraries and code examples being published by the mbed community, the platform provides a productive environment for getting things done.

This diagram shows the commonly used interfaces and their pinout locations. Note that all the numbered pins (p5-p30) can also be used as digital inputs or outputs. Some pinout options are not shown here; for a full details, see the NXP LPC1768 user manual or Datasheet.

mbed LPC1768 Module Power

  • Powered by USB or 4.5v - 9.0v DC appiled to VIN
  • <200mA (100mA with Ethernet disabled)
  • Real-time clock battery backup input VB
    • 1.8v - 3.3v Keeps Real-time clock running
    • Requires 27uA, can be supplied by a coin cell
  • 3.3v regulated output on VOUT to power peripherals
  • 5.0v from USB available on VU (only available when USB is connected!)
  • Current limited to 500mA
  • Digital IO pins are 3.3v, 40mA each, 400mA max total

mbed LPC1768 Module Pins

  • Vin - External Power supply to the board (4.5V-9V, 100mA + external circuits powered through the MCU)
  • Vb - Battery backup input for Real Time Clock (1.8V-3.3V, 30ľA)
  • nR - Active-low reset pin with identical functionality to the reset button (Pull up resistor is on the board, so Reset can be driven with an open collector)
  • IF+/- : Reserved for Future use
