PIC Development Module for 8- to 28-pin SOIC @ 1.27mm pitch US$15.00

PIC Development Module for 8- to 28-pin SOIC @ 1.27mm pitch

8-bit PIC Microcontroller Development SchmartModule A

This PIC Microcrontroller Development board supports 116 different PIC microcontrollers in 8-, 14-, 18-, 20-, and 28-pin SOIC packages. This board is populated with jumper headers, voltage regulator, power connector, LED and Reset button. You solder on a PIC programming connector (single-row or RJ12), a 2×14 break-out header for pin access, and the PIC microcontroller of your choice (check list of supported devices below).

This product utilizes the patented Schmartboard|ez technology to make soldering the surface-mount device easy. Your SMT part will sit in grooves that hold it in place and already have solder in them. So all you need to do is put the chip in the grooves, apply flux, and use a small enough soldering tip.

Once the PIC is soldered, you then solder the included headers to the IC Pinout area and the appropriate ICSP area (or install an optional RJ12 connector), then configure the jumpers for your PIC part number (see the Configuration document below) and start programming. This one board supports almost all of the 8-bit PICs available in SOIC packages. (See list of supported devices below.) A PIC microcontroller is not included. The picture shows a 14-pin PIC installed for illustration purposes.

PIC Oscillator Options

This PIC development board has through-hole soldering pads for a crystal and supporting components (not included). You can of course also use the internal R/C oscillator integrated on most PIC chips.

Power Supply

The board features a 5V DC voltage regulator that accepts input voltages between 7.5V and 12V DC. A barrel power connector allows you to attach a regulated wall brick power supply. See the add-on options below for matching power supplies.

PIC In-Circuit Programming

This PIC SOIC Development board has through-hole soldering pads for both 6-pin single-row and RJ12-type ICSP (in-circuit serial programming) connectors. There are separate soldering pads of each for 8/14/20-pin, 18-pin and 28-pin PIC devices. One single-row 1x6 header for ICSP programming is included for you to solder to the board. For additional connectors or RJ12 type connectors, see the add-on options below.

The board's silkscreen and documentation make the common mistake of using the term RJ11 to refer to an RJ12. Although the same size, an RJ11 has only four pins while an RJ12 has six.

To program your PIC microcontroller, you will need a PIC In-Circuit Debugger or Programmer (not included). See our Microchip PIC Programmers and In-Circuit Debuggers categories.

PIC Pin Access

All PIC pins are accessible via 2×14 through-hole solder pads that accept standard 0.1" spaced headers. A dual-row 2×14 header is included with the board that you can solder in place if desired. Before soldering, you can break off the unnecessary pins when using a PIC with fewer than 28 pins (for example, the picture shows a 14-pin PIC installed, and the breakout header has been cut down to 2×7 size).

Connect multiple SchmartBoards together!

Every SchmartBoard has small notches along its sides which allow you to connect any number of them together in any combination. For example, you can attach this SchmartBoard to prototyping SchmartBoards that carry interfaces and other electronics. Purchase a set of the Mechanical Bridge Interconnects available in the options below if you want to be able to combine your SchmartBoards.
