The enclosed adapter lets you use the JTAG programming algorithm with this AVR USB programmer. JTAG programming works with newer AVR ATmega microntrollers with 40 pins or more, and it is much faster than serial programming. Of course, the adapter does not make on-chip debugging possible; you will need an actual AVR In-Circuit Debugger to do that.
