mikromedia for PIC18FJ: PIC18F87J50, TFT LCD, Accelerometer

The mikromedia for PIC18FJ is a compact development system with lots of on-board peripherals which provides a convenient platform for development of devices with multimedia content. The central part of the system is the 8-bit PIC18F87J50 microcontroller that comes with a fast USB HID bootloader installed so that you can program from your PC without any extra hardware. It also can be programmed with a Microchip ICD2, ICD3 or compatible external programmer. The mikromedia for PIC18FJ features integrated modules such as audio module, TFT 320240 touch screen display, USB connector for communication with the microcontroller, accelerometer, Flash memory, and microSD card connector.

This development system is powered by your PC via USB. Simply plug in the USB cable and the TFT display will turn on automatically. It also can be battery powered.

The board measures 8 6 cm (3.14 2.36 inches). All unused microcontroller pins are available via pads along the sides of the board. These allow you to add on mikromedia shields (see options below), or to add this board to the mikromedia WorkStation.

PIC18F87J50 Microcontroller

This high-performance 8-bit microcontroller is ideal for multimedia applications. Features include:
  • Up to 12 MIPS operation
  • 128 KB Flash memory
  • 3904 Bytes RAM (includes dual access RAM used by the USB module which is shared with data memory)
  • CPU operating voltage: 2V to 3.6V
  • USB 2.0 Compliant SIE
  • Two External Clock modes, up to 48 MHz
  • Internal 31 kHz Oscillator, Tunable Internal Oscillator 31 kHz to 8 MHz
  • Max. I2C speed 400 kHz
  • 10-bit, 12-channel Analog-to-Digital (A/D)
  • Address Capability of up to 2MB
  • 8-bit or 16-bit Interface
  • 12-bit, 16-bit and 20-bit Addressing modes

Programming with bootloader

For programming the microcontroller, you can use a bootloader program which is pre-installed in the MCU memory. To transfer a .hex file from a PC to the MCU, just run the included PC bootloader software (mikroBootloader) which also can be downloaded below. The board has a mini-USB connector and ships with a cable to connect to your PC.

Programming with external programmer

In case you want to remove the USB bootloader or need to re-install it, the microcontroller can be programmed with an external programmer (not included). The board has two sets of pads for installing programming headers (two different pinouts). In order to connect an external programmer to the development system, you will need to solder a connector or header pins to at least one set of pads. One set is compatible with the mikroProg-PIC; the other is compatible with the ICD2 Connector Board which will allow you to use a Microchip ICD2/ICD3 or compatible programmer.

Crystal Oscillator

The board is equipped with an 8 MHz crystal oscillator circuit that provides external clock to the microcontroller OSC pins. This base frequency is suitable for further clock multipliers and ideal for generation of the necessary USB clock, which ensures proper operation of bootloader and your custom USB-based applications.

microSD Card Slot

There is a built-in microSD card slot for microSD cards on the development system (a microSD card is not included). It enables the system to expand available memory space. microSD cards use Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI) for communication with the microcontroller. Max. microSD SPI speed is 12 MHz.

LCD with Touch Screen

The development system features a TFT 320240 display with a resistive touch panel. What is displayed or can be entered via the touch panel depends on the program that you load into the microcontroller. The TFT display is capable of showing 262,000 different colors. Current consumption with backlight on is 51.7 mA (backlight current 42 mA).

Audio Module

The mikromedia for PIC18FJ features a VS1053 MPEG audio codec. This module enables audio reproduction by using stereo headphones connected to the system via a 3.5mm connector. All functions of this module can be controlled by the microcontroller from within your software using the Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI). Max. audio codec SPI speed is 3 MHz.

USB Module

The development system can communicate with USB devices via the USB module integrated into the microcontroller. The board has a mini-USB connector.


The ADXL345 accelerometer is used to measure acceleration, orientation, gravity, etc. The accelerometer's function is defined the program that you load into the microcontroller. Communication between the accelerometer and the microcontroller is performed via the I2C interface. You can set the accelerometer address to 0 or 1 by re-soldering the SMD jumper (zero-ohm resistor) to the appropriate position. This jumper is placed in address 1 position by default.

Flash Memory Module

The M25P80 Flash memory module enables the microcontroller to use an additional 8MBit Flash memory, useful for multimedia applications. It is connected to the microcontroller via the Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI). Max. serial Flash SPI speed is 12 MHz.

Battery Charger

As well as via USB, the mikromedia system can be supplied with power via a Li-Polymer battery. A 2-pin Molex 5264 connector is available for you to attach a battery. While a battery is connected, if you attach a USB cable connected to a PC, the on-board MCP73832 battery charger will start to charge the battery. Charging current value is ~250mA and charging voltage is 4.2V DC.

Reset Button

The board is equipped with a reset button on the LCD side so it can be available to the user if the mikromedia board is placed in an enclosure. The other side of the board has pads for installing a second reset button if needed.

Software Examples

The software examples ZIP file that you can download below contains the following, both compiled and as source code in C, BASIC and Pascal. The source codes provide detailed explanatory comments.
  • Accelerometer demo sends measured X,Y,Z co-ordinates to a PC via USART.
  • MMC/SD project demonstrates various aspects of the MMC library: Reading, Writing, Re-writing, Appending, Modifying several files at once, Creating swap file, Deleting.
  • MP3 CODEC demo reads one MP3 file from a MMC/SD card and sends it to the VS1053 for decoding and playing.
  • Demonstration of SerialFlash usage: Erase, Read ID, Reading/Writing a Byte, Reading/Writing an Array.
  • Demo for displaying a JPG image on the 320240 TFT LCD.
  • Touchpanel library demo creates a basic calculator supporting addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
  • USB demo establishes connection with HID terminal on the PC, then echoes received data.
