This is an infrared receiver with 38 kHz carrier frequency. This infrared receiver is a compatible replacement for the ones found in the Boe-Bot, ActivityBot and Shield Bot robot kits. It is recommended to replace the IR receivers in pairs, since the models supplied in kits may vary over time. Currently, this is a Sharp GP1UX511QS.
This sensor also works well with the Universal IR Remote Control; it is the sensor included in the IR Remote Parts Kit.
The pinout of the GP1UX511QS is: OUT, GND, VS.
This IR receiver is relatively stable in its detection distance over a broad range of lighting sources and conditions, which is essential for making the Boe-Bot activities as reliable as possible in different classroom environments. However, it is somewhat sensitive to IR interference such as from the electrical ballasts in fluorescent lamps. If you know you'll be working exclusively in an area with fluorescent lighting, you may get better performance from the Vishay TSOP34138, though that sensor is less effective in other lighting conditions.
