
This is an economical bundle of items to get you started using a 3.2-inch LCD TFT touch panel from 4D Systems on your Raspberry Pi. It includes the touchscreen display module itself (which comes with a header strip and 5-way jumper cable) and a Raspberry Pi serial adapter. All you'll need to provide is your own Raspberry Pi system. The adapter is compatible with models A, B and B+. Raspberry Pi Display Module Pack Overview With this Raspberry Pi Display Module Pack, you'll be able to start using the display in seconds. Just plug the adapter into your Raspberry Pi, then use the supplied cable to connect the display to the adapter. The uLCD-32PTU display has a comprehensive range of serial commands ready to be received from your Raspberry Pi, which can instruct it to draw primitives (e.g. lines, rectangles, circles, text), display images, play sound, play video, and log data to a microSD card. It utilizes your Raspberry Pi's serial port (RX and TX). Power for the display comes from your Raspberry Pi's 5V bus. No external power is required. Note: The display will NOT function as a Primary Display for the Raspberry Pi. The Raspberry Pi OS can not be displayed on this LCD; it acts as a slave/secondary display only. The display module is programmed using the Workshop4 IDE, and the Raspberry Pi acts as the Host to send/receive information to/from the display module. If you want a small primary touchscreen display to use the Raspberry Pi OS, see 4DPi-32 or 4DPi-35 (each of which plugs into your Raspberry Pi directly). Programmable Display As well as using the display module as a serial slave to your Raspberry Pi, it is possible to reprogram it to be completely or partially autonomous, programmed in a C-like language (4DGL) using the 4D Workshop4 IDE. That IDE also has a graphics-based programming tool, ViSi-Genie, which can generate 4DGL code for you (and there's a Raspberry Pi library for that environment as well, so you can quickly set up pre-made buttons, sliders, or gauges that interact with your Raspberry Pi). The included header strip can be used for making a connection to a breadboard to assist in programming or as an interface to external electronics when the display is operating autonomously. Using one of those is recommended if you ever want to program the display for autonomous function, to update the firmware, or to use the ViSi-Genie environment with its Raspberry Pi library. Raspberry Pi Libraries Available By default, the display comes configured for Serial Environment use. You can download the generic C Serial Library from the 4D Workshop4 IDE page (the PICASO version applies to the display in this pack). The library is not specific to Raspberry Pi, but it can be ported easily; all the source code is included. Download the PICASO Serial Command Set Reference Manual for details of all the commands. From that same 4D Workshop4 IDE page, you also can download the ViSi-Genie library for Raspberry Pi. There are some ViSi-Genie-RaspPi-Demo examples to be found in the 4D GitHub Repository as well. Note that you will need one of the optional USB-to-Serial adapters (select below) in order to use the IDE to program the module for the ViSi-Genie environment.
