Weather Station WS-3000

Whether you're an agriculturalist, a professional meteorologist or a weather hobbyist, building your own weather station can be a rewarding project. This kit represents the three core components of weather measurement: wind speed, wind direction and rainfall.

This weather station consists of three different sensors: a wind vane, an anemometer, and a pluviometer. The whole thing connects to your system via six wires the pluviometer can plug in separately via two wires; the anemometer and wind vane connect as a single unit via four wires, with the two connected together via an RJ11 socket on the vane.

Weather Station Features

Anemometer

  • Sensitivity: 2.4 kph (about 1.5 mph) / turn
  • Wind Speed Range: 0 to 240 kph (about 150 mph)
  • Height: 7.1 cm (about 2.8 in)
  • Arm Length: 8.9 cm (about 3.5 in)
  • Interface: RJ11 (plugs into Wind Vane)
The anemometer consists of a normally-open Reed switch that closes for a short period of time when the arms of the anemometer complete a turn, so the output is a digital signal whose frequency will be proportional to the wind speed.

Wind Vane

  • Height: 8.9 cm (about 3.5 in)
  • Length: 17.8 cm (about 7 in)
  • Maximum Accuracy: 22.5
  • Resistance Range: 688Ω to 120kΩ
  • Interface: Four wires (for both anemometer and vane)
The wind vane turns freely on a platform base that has a network of eight resistors connected to normally-open switches that are closed (one or two at a time) when a magnet in the vane acts upon them. This allows you to distinguish up to 16 different positions hence the resolution of 22.5. The equivalent resistance of the wind vane, along with a 10kΩ resistance, form a voltage divider which should be powered at 3.3V e.g., on a Waspmote system, through a digital switch controlled by the ANALOG1 pin whose output can be measured at the analog input ANALOG5.

Pluviometer

  • Height: 9.05 cm (about 3.56 in)
  • Length: 23 cm (about 9.1 in)
  • Bucket Capacity: 0.28 mm (about 0.11 in) of rain
  • Interface: Two wires
The pluviometer consists of a small bucket that, once completely filled (0.28mm of water approximately), closes a switch which causes the bucket to empty itself automatically. The repetition of this process results in a digital signal (by monitoring the switch state) whose frequency is proportional to the intensity of rainfall.
