Rotary encoders can be used similarly to potentiometers — the difference being that an encoder has full rotation without limits (it just goes round and round). This encoder provides quadrature output so that you can tell how much and in which direction it has been turned. It's great for navigating menu screens and things like that, and has detents for a nice tactile feel.
This encoder also has a common anode RGB LED built in, as well as a push-button function. You might want to purchase also the optional clear knob that fits on this encoder's shaft.
The LilyPad MP3 Arduino board is designed to support this encoder.
