Wild Thumper 6WD Robot Chassis, 7.2V DC 34:1 Motors, Steel Gears US$249.95

ROB-11056
Wild Thumper 6WD Robot Chassis, 7.2V DC 34:1 Motors, Steel Gears

The Wild Thumper 6-wheel platform is a rugged robot chassis. It takes almost no time to go from un-boxing to rolling chassis, and it's ready to be expanded upon, making it a great basis for a serious robot.

Each of the included six motors is mounted on independent suspension and outfitted with 34:1 steel gearboxes. The motors are wired together on a terminal strip inside the 2mm thick anodized metal frame and can be controlled on two channels (left and right). The entire chassis is perforated with 10mm pitched, 4mm diameter mounting holes, and there is plenty of room inside the chassis for batteries, drivers and other support hardware. The chassis comes with the six Dagu 120mm off-road wheels shown.

Because there are six motors total, each channel of your motor driver will need to be able to supply a decent amount of current to get things moving. This is a differential drive platform, meaning that a turn is accomplished simply by driving one side faster or slower than the other, or turning the two sides in opposite directions. Because the pivot point of this turn is made up essentially of the opposing three tires, a gradual turn will require less power than a sharp one, and the more power you can source, the more maneuverable your platform will be.

This is not a complete robot! It is just the chassis, wheels and motors. Recommended control boards are the Monster Moto Shield (requires an Arduino host board) or the Dagu T'Rex Motor Controller (we no longer carry that, unfortunately). It's possible to use the Propeller Project Board also.

Note: If you use the T'Rex Controller, make sure you connect its 30mm and 6mm brass hex spacers together to make four 36mm spacers. This will hold the PCB high enough to prevent any short circuit against the Wild Thumper chassis.
