Weather Shield for Arduino: Humidity, Pressure, Temp. Sensors


The Weather Shield is an easy-to-use Arduino shield that grants you access to barometric pressure, relative humidity, luminosity and temperature sensing. There also are connections on this shield for optional sensors such as wind speed, direction, rain gauge and GPS for location and accurate timing.

This shield includes an HTU21D humidity sensor, an MPL3115A2 barometric pressure sensor, and an ALS-PT19 light sensor. It relies on the HTU21D and MPL3115A2 Arduino libraries. The shield also has two unpopulated RJ11/RJ12 connector spaces (for optional hookup of rain and wind sensors if you populate these spaces with RJ12-6P6C jacks) and a 6-pin GPS connector (for optional hookup of a GP635T GPS module).

The Weather Shield can operate from 3V up to 10V and has built-in voltage regulators and signal translators.

There is a switch labeled Serial on the shield. This is used to select which pins on the Arduino connect the to GPS. When sent to Soft, serial pins are connected to digital pins 4 (RX to GPS) and 5 (TX from GPS). When set to Hard, they are connected to the internal UART. In almost all cases, the switch should be set to Soft.

You may want to connect the OpenLog datalogger module to this shield. It will allow you to store readings over a period of time.

Note: The shield does not come with header pins populated. You can purchase a pack of stackable Arduino Shield headers from the options below.

Typical Accuracy of On-board Sensors

  • Humidity: 2%
  • Pressure: 50Pa
  • Temperature: 0.3C (HTU21D and MPL3115A2 each provide temperature sensing in addition to their primary functions)
