GameDuino-based Arduino Shield with 32MB, PS/2, VGA, Audio, UEXT US$38.43

GameDuino-based Arduino Shield with 32MB, PS/2, VGA, Audio, UEXT

The MOD-VGA-32MB improves upon the popular GameDuino design, adding a PS/2 keyboard interface and an extra 32MB SDRAM which allows higher resolutions and more colors to be available (with appropriate firmware). It also features a UEXT interface, so it can be connected to any microcontroller system that has a UEXT interface, and not just to Arduinos (though of course the Arduino shield connectors are still present).

Arduino/UEXT A/V Add-on Board Features

  • Xilinx Spartan XC3S200A FPGA
  • PS/2 keyboard connector
  • Audio connector (3.5mm stereo jack)
  • VGA connector
  • UEXT connector (see below)
  • 32MB additional SDRAM (firmware to support higher resolutions and more colors has not yet been developed)
  • Ready Arduino software support
  • Mounted Arduino headers
  • FR-4, 1.5 mm, soldermask, white print
  • PCB dimensions: 55.88 53.34 mm (2.2 2.1")

GameDuino Functions

  • Video output is 400300 pixels in 512 colors
  • All color processed internally at 15-bit precision
  • Compatible with any standard VGA monitor (800600 @ 72Hz)
  • Background Graphics:
    512512-pixel character background
256 characters, each with independent 4-color palette
    Pixel-smooth X-Y wraparound scroll
  • Foreground Graphics:
Each sprite is 1616 pixels with per-pixel transparency
Each sprite can use 256, 16 or 4 colors
    Four-way rotate and flip
96 sprites per scan line; 1536 texels per line
    Pixel-perfect sprite collision detection
  • Audio output is a stereo 12-bit frequency synthesizer
  • 64 independent voices, 10-8000 Hz
  • Per-voice sine wave or white noise
  • Sample playback channel

Note for Arduino Mega, Leonardo and Due Users

You will need to use some jumper wire in order to use GameDuino on an Arduino Mega, Leonardo and Due, as those boards have SPI pins in different locations than the Uno, Maple, etc. For example, on the Mega, you'll need to jump pin 51 to pin 11, pin 50 to pin 12, and pin 52 to pin 13. The Leonardo and Due have SPI pins only on the ICSP headers, so you'll have to jump ICSP-4 to pin 11, ICSP-1 to pin 12, and ICSP-3 to pin 13 (this also works for the Mega). There is a table on the Arduino SPI Reference Page.

UEXT Connector

Besides the Arduino connectors, this board has a UEXT connector, which provides another solderless way to connect this module to a system with a microcontroller. UEXT provides for power and serial communication lines (I2C, SPI, RS232). There are dozens of microcontroller systems and development boards that can connect to this module via UEXT using the supplied cable. Click on the architectures below for lists of compatible boards:
