Arduino Radiation Sensor Shield w/ J305βγ Geiger Tube US$170.00

Arduino Radiation Sensor Shield w/ J305βγ Geiger Tube

This Radiation Sensor Shield for Arduino includes a North Optic J305βγ Geiger tube which is capable of detecting Beta and Gamma radiation. You can then read the levels using an Arduino (such as the Arduino Uno).

As well as on the serial terminal, the radiation levels can be shown using different actuators:

  • Piezo: it allows us to hear the typical "chirp" common in radioactivity counters
  • LEDs: 3 green and 2 red LEDs let you show low, medium and high levels
  • LCD: it displays the counts per minute (cpm) and the equivalent absorbed energy levels in Sieverts (ÁSV/h)

If you want to use a different Geiger tube, you can purchase the board without a Geiger tube. Any tube in the 400V to 1000V range that detects Alpha/Beta/Gamma radiation can be used.

J305βγ Geiger Tube Specifications

  • Manufacturer: North Optic
  • Radiation Detection: β, γ (Beta, Gamma)
  • Length: 111 mm
  • Diameter: 11 mm
  • Recommended Voltage: 350V
  • Plateau Voltage: 360-440V
  • Sensitivity γ (60Co): 65cps/(ÁR/s)
  • Sensitivity γ (equivalent Sievert): 108 cpm / (ÁSv/h)
  • Max cpm: 30000
  • cps/mR/h: 18
  • cpm/m/h: 1080
  • cpm/ÁSv/h: 123.147092360319
  • Factor: 0.00812037037037
WARNING: Never touch the tube ends directly with hands or using any metallic object, under any circumstance. The tube ends work with high voltages (up to 500V) which can produce spikes if they are touched. Such spikes can cause serious injury or death (and damage the board itself too).

Note: The Geiger tube should not be exposed to sunlight because the CPM may be less accurate. It is recommended to put the sensor in an opaque enclosure when working outdoors.
