This is an infrared receiver with 38 kHz carrier frequency. This infrared receiver is a compatible replacement for the ones found in the Sumo-Bot Robot Kit. It is recommended to replace the IR receivers in pairs, since the models supplied in kits may vary over time. Currently, this is a Vishay TSOP34128.
The pinout of the TSOP34128 is: OUT, GND, VS.
This IR receiver has filtering that works best in fluorescent lighting. In areas where incandescent or halogen bulbs are used exclusively, it becomes very far-sighted.
Note for Boe-Bot, ActivityBot, Shield Bot and IR Remote Parts Kit Users The current textbook and user manuals for the Boe-Bot, ActivityBot, Shield Bot and the IR Remote Parts Kit refer to this part number (350-00014) as the IR receiver used. However, that is no longer the case, as the Panasonic sensor originally associated with this part number has been discontinued. The current versions of those kits use the Sharp GP1UX511QS, which is much more stable in its detection distance over a broader range of lighting sources and conditions than this Vishay sensor, though is more sensitive to interference.
