The Venus638FLPx GPS receiver is the successor to the Venus634LPx and has improved sensitivity and a faster update rate. The module can be configured to a 20Hz update rate. With two serial ports, UART and SPI interfaces (please see the datasheets on how to implement the SPI interface), 29mA operating current, and high sensitivity, this receiver opens new doors for tracking. This module puts out the standard NMEA-0183 or SkyTraq Binary sentences at a default rate of 9600bps (adjustable to 115200bps). The Venus638FLPx has an integrated LNA (with multipath detection and suppression), built-in RTC, and integrated single power supply making it simple to use. The Venus638FLPx also allows for limited on-chip logging (see the firmware below). In addition, the module supports data logging with an external SPI Flash.
This board includes an SMA connector to attach an external antenna (required but not included; use the checkbox below to add an antenna), and headers for 3.3V serial data, NAV (lock) indication, Pulse-Per-Second output, and external Flash support. It also has solder jumpers for configuring the power consumption, boot memory, and backup supply. This board requires a regulated 3.3V supply to operate. At full power the board uses up to 90mA; at reduced power it requires up to 60mA.
You can connect an external battery or supercapacitor to the board, to support very fast restarts after power is removed. There are even pads on the bottom of the board for mounting a 0.2F supercap (not included), which will keep the board hot-startable for up to 7 hours without power.
Note: While this board has pins breaking out the Venus638FLPx's second serial port (RX1,TX1) and I2C interface (SDA,SCL), these ports are not used by the stock firmware. SkyTraq offers an SDK allowing the creation of customized firmware; contact them for details.
