Trackball Board, Lighted Ball with Pushbutton

This board allows you to add a lighted trackball input device to your project. The trackball is the type found on many Blackberry models. The four spindles on the trackball have a tiny circular magnet the end. Each of these is paired with an SMD Hall-effect sensor. These sensors are used to measure up, down, left and right movements of the trackball. An SMD momentary switch is placed under the trackball to give you a select switch. The BTN line will be pulled low when the switch is pressed.

Also included on the Trackballer are four LEDs: red, blue, green and white. These can be powered to light the clear trackball any color. The lower picture shows the trackball unit in use with the white LED lighted.

All features are broken out to a 0.1"-pitch header. Regulated 2.5V to 5.25V DC power must be provided to power the Hall sensors. The trackball is attached with CA glue then held in place with the upper mounting PCB as shown. You can remove the mounting board if you wish; the Phillips screws and nylon standoffs are standard 4-40 size. The board comes as shown in the upper picture, with all components populated and the mounting PCB already assembled. Header pins are not included; you can add some using the option selector below.

If you do replace the mounting PCB with your own enclosure, note that overtightening the mounting screws can cause the Hall-effect sensors to malfunction.

The Hall-effect sensors and trackball combo are surprisingly sensitive. A slight roll of the trackball creates multiple high/low transitions on the four axis pins, easily picked up by any microcontroller. A 360 rotation of the trackball along a single axis will result in about nine high/low transitions.

Note that the Jumper Wire pack in the options below contains 10 wires, but this board will require 11 wires. We have many different packs of M-F Jumper Wires available, as well as F-F and even M-M if your configuration will require that.
