The DAISY-4 module is a single-channel relay board that is part of the modular Daisy System. It is controlled by the FOX Board G20 via the DAISY-1 Adapter, or by the Terra Board.

This module allows the Fox or Terra to control larger loads and devices like AC or DC Motors, electromagnets, solenoids, and incandescent light bulbs.

The Daisy ports that can be used are:

  • D2 or D5 on the DAISY-1 adapter
  • D11 or D12 on the Terra Board
Be sure to get a 0.05" pitch 2x5 IDC cable (FC-19818-10P-FF) to make the connection. The cable is not included.

If you have the obsolete BeeBoard, you can connect this module to ports W2, W3 or W4.

Up to eight DAISY-4 relay modules can be connected to the Fox or Terra by a combination of daisy-chaining two boards on a ribbon cable and connecting each of those to an additional module via the screw terminal connector (thus enabling four relay boards per Daisy port).

You will have to build your own daisy-chain cable for that purpose. The IDC connectors have 0.05" pitch, so you'll need female IDC connectors that size and a ribbon cable with 0.025" pitch.

DIP Switch Setup

The DIP Switch SW1 allows you to select which line will drive the relay. The table below refers to the DAISY-1 adapter for the FOX Board G20.

Only one DIP switch must be turned ON at a time. For example, if the DAISY-4 is connected to port D5 and DIP switch 1 is ON, then the relay will be driven by line PB12 (1=on; 2=off).

Python Code Example

Here are simple examples of managing the DAISY-4 module in Python. They assume the module is on the Fox Board's Daisy port D5 with DIP switch 1 ON, and they call the ablib Library.

To turn on the relay, use relayon.py:

myrelay.on()
And to turn off the relay, use relayoff.py:
#!/usr/bin/python
import ablib

myrelay = ablib.Daisy4('D5','DIP1')
myrelay.off()
The main part of this code is the class Daisy4() the parameters of which are the Daisy connector and the DIP switch that is in the ON position.

  • WARNING

    The relay mounted on this board can control external devices that work at ~120V AC or ~220V AC. This is HIGH VOLTAGE, which can be lethal. NEVER work on this module while it is plugged in. To reduce the risk of fire or death, make sure all connections are how they should be, and verify that they are fully insulated and won't short each other out, before applying power. ALWAYS unplug the device before altering connections. Use of this product is at your own risk.
