The 3G+GPS module for Waspmote allows sensor networks and M2M devices to connect to a wireless system or the Cloud via high-speed WCDMA and HSPA cellular networks in the same way that smartphones do. This makes it possible for sensor nodes to send not only discrete sensor information such as temperature and humidity (which can be encoded using just a single number) but also comples streams of information like photos and videos. With this module and associated Waspmote hardware, you can develop wireless smart security applications.
This module plugs into the dedicated socket on a Waspmote main board, still allowing you to plug in a Waspmote sensor board as well.
The module also features an internal GPS that enables indoor and outdoor geolocation, combining standard NMEA frames with mobile cell ID triangulation using both assisted-mobile (A-GPS) and mobile-based (S-GPS) modes.
The module is designed to work with Internet servers, internally implementing several application-layer protocols which make it easier to send the information to the cloud. You can make HTTP and HTTPS (secure mode) navigation, downloading and uploading content to a web server. Likewise, FTP and FTPS (secure mode) protocols are available, which is useful when your application requires handling files. You can even send and receive email directly from Waspmote using the SMTP and POP3 clients implemented internally.
For camera-based applications (both visual and IR), see the Waspmote Advanced Video Camera Sensor Board. That board allows each node of the sensor network to take photos or videos and upload them in real time. It also features 22 high-power IR LEDs for night-vision mode.
This 3G module comes with a 2GB microSD card (supports up to 32GB), which is used to store photos and videos that were taken by the camera sensor board, without having to be handled by the Waspmote MCU. This is especially useful as the 3G module can work at full speed (~7.2Mbps download, ~5.5Mbps upload).
3G/GPS Waspmote Board Features The SIMCom SIM5218E is a quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE and tri-band UMTS/HSPA engine that works on frequencies of GSM 850 MHz, EGSM 900 MHz, DCS 1800 MHz, PCS 1900 MHz, and WCDMA 2100/1900/900 MHz.
