This is an Arduino shield containing a CC3000 WiFi Module. The CC3000 from Texas Instruments is a self-contained 802.11b/g wireless network processor that makes incorporating internet connectivity into your project simple. Instead of the more standard UART communication method, the CC3000 module utilizes a SPI interface allowing you to control the flow of data as you please. What makes the CC3000 unique is its ability to associate to a WiFi access point using a cell phone app in the Texas Instruments process called SmartConfig.

This shield also provides an optional feature that allows you to attach an external antenna, just in case you need a little extra power. This is useful if you want to route an antenna to the outside of an enclosure or to increase your WiFi gain. The board has a U.FL connector for this purpose. You will have to move the Antenna Select capacitor if you want to use an external antenna.

The CC3000 Shield has a standard Arduino R3 shield layout with two rows of pins on each side. The right-side headers have been broken out on the shield if you want to solder headers or wires for easy prototyping in the area right of the microSD card slot.

This shield adds a 74AHC1G125 tri-state buffer to the MISO line to alleviate an issue with the CC3000 not sharing the SPI bus.

Pins used by CC3000 Shield

  • 2 (INT) is the interrupt pin that the CC3000 uses to notify the Arduino that it has data.
  • 7 (EN) is the enable pin that the Arduino uses to turn the CC3000 off and on.
  • 8 (SDCS) is the chip select for the SD card.
  • 10 (CS) is the chip select for the CC3000.
  • 11 (MOSI) is the SPI communication line from the Arduino to the CC3000.
  • 12 (MISO) is the SPI communication line from the CC3000 to the Arduino.
  • 13 (SCK) is the SPI clock line.

Note: To use the Arduino SD Library, you will need to change the chipSelect variable to pin 8.

Note: The shield comes as shown, without connection headers. See the Optional Recommended Products list below for some header options, e.g. stackable header/sockets or just normal pin headers. You must solder them yourself.
