XBee Explorer USB Dongle, USB-to-Serial Access to XBee Pins


This board is similar to the XBee Explorer USB. Whereas that board is designed to be connected to a USB port via a mini-USB cable, this Dongle version is designed to be plugged into a USB port directly or into a USB 2.0 Extension Cable.

The XBee Explorer Dongle works with all XBee modules, including the Series 1 and Series 2.5, standard and Pro versions. Plug an XBee module into the XBee Explorer, plug it into a USB port, and you will have direct access to the serial and programming pins on the XBee unit.

This order page is for the board only. XBee modules are sold separately. The image below shows an XBee installed on an earlier version of the Explorer Dongle that is plugged into a laptop's USB port, for illustration purposes.

The XBee Explorer uses an FTDI FT231X USB-to-Serial chip to create a virtual COM port on your system. In Windows, the Device Manager will show it as a USB Serial Port. There's also a reset button and four LEDs that can be useful for debugging your code: RX, TX, RSSI and a power indicator. The LEDs can be disabled by cutting jumper traces on the bottom of the board. You must cut the RSSI jumper trace if you're using an XBee XSC (S3 or S3B) module!

The board's MIC5219 voltage regulator is rated for 500mA, so this board can be used safely with XBee Pro modules (you may need to use FTDI's ft_prog.exe utility to increase the Max Bus Power value under "USB Config Descriptors").
