The mikromedia PLUS for Stellaris is a compact development system with lots of on-board peripherals which allows development of hand-held devices with multimedia content. The central part of the system is the 32-bit LX4F232H5QD ARM Cortex-M4 microcontroller (known now as TM4C123GH6PGE). The mikromedia+ for Stellaris features integrated modules such as stereo MP3 codec, 4.3-inch TFT 480272 touch screen display, accelerometer, microSD card slot, buzzer, IR receiver, RGB LED, PIN photodiode, temperature sensor, 2.4GHz RF transceiver, 8Mbit Flash memory, RTC battery, Li-Poly battery charger, etc. The board also contains a mini-B USB OTG connector, power screw terminals, On/Off switch, and more.

A color user manual and code examples are included. The board comes pre-programmed with a USB HID bootloader, so you won't have to spend a penny more on external programmers. If you do want to, 25-pin pads are available for using a mikroProg for Tiva (previously called mikroProg for Stellaris) or other compatible JTAG programmer.

All unused microcontroller pins are available via pads along the sides of the board. The board measures 119.54 78 mm (4.71 3.07 inches).

ARM Cortex-M4 Multimedia Board Features

LX4F232H5QD microcontroller

This 144-pin high-performance 32-bit microcontroller with its integrated modules in combination with the on-board modules is ideal for multimedia applications. The LX4F232H5QD was a pre-release version of what originally was going to be called LM4F232H5QD, so the documentation refers to it by that name. However, Texas Instruments decided that the release version of this MCU would in fact be called TM4C123GH6PGE and it is considered part of the new Tiva family rather than Stellaris.

SSD1963 Graphics Controller

This controller handles the TFT display. It has a built-in 1215KB frame buffer, dynamic backlight control, and many other features.

Three power supply methods

You can apply power to the board using the provided Mini-B USB cable, using its battery connector, or using its screw terminal connector. The USB connection can provide up to 500mA of current, which is more than enough for the operation of the microcontroller and all on-board modules. When using Li-Poly battery, an MCP73832 charging circuit permits the battery to be charged via USB or the screw terminals. An RGB LED indicates charging status. Power via the screw terminals should be between 2.5V and 12V DC. An LED will indicate the presence of power supply.

Programming with bootloader

For programming the microcontroller, you can use a bootloader program which is pre-installed in the MCU memory. To transfer a .hex file from a PC to the MCU, you can use the free mikroBootloader application. The board has a mini-USB connector and ships with a cable to connect to your PC.

Programming with external programmer/debugger

In case you want to remove the USB bootloader, need to re-install it, or want to perform in-circuit debugging, the microcontroller can be programmed with an external in-circuit programmer/debugger (not included). The board has pads for installing programming headers compatible with the mikroProg for Tiva (previously called mikroProg for Stellaris).

Reset Button

The board is equipped with a reset button on the LCD side so it can be available to the user if the mikromedia is placed in an enclosure or has a shield attached.

RTC Battery

The mikromedia+ for Stellaris features a battery holder that accepts a CR1216, CR1220 or CR1225 coin cell battery (not included). The battery will allow the real-time clock module to function even while the system power is off.

Crystal Oscillator and VREF

The board is equipped with a 16 MHz crystal oscillator circuit that provides an external clock waveform to the microcontroller OSC0 and OSC1 pins. This base frequency is suitable for further clock multipliers and ideal for generation of a necessary USB clock, which ensures proper operation of the bootloader and your custom USB-based applications. The board also contains a 32.768 kHz crystal oscillator which provides an external clock for the internal RTCC module. A 2.048V external voltage reference is provided for the microcontroller's ADC.

microSD Card Slot

The board contains a microSD card slot for using microSD cards in your projects. It enables you to store large amounts of data externally, thus saving microcontroller memory. microSD cards use Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI) for communication with the microcontroller.

Touch Screen

The development system features a 4.3" TFT 480272 display covered with a resistive touch panel. It enables data to be entered and displayed at the same time. The TFT display is capable of showing data in 256K different colors. A stylus is sold separately; see the options below.

Audio Module

mikromedia+ for Stellaris features a VS1053 audio codec. This chip enables audio reproduction and recording by using a headphones/microphone set connected to the system via the quadrupole 3.5mm jack. All functions of this module are controlled by the microcontroller over Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI). In and Out channels are provided on side headers also.

USB Connection

The LX4F232H5QD has an integrated USB OTG module which enables you to implement USB communication functionality to the mikromedia+ board. Connection to a target USB Host is achieved with a Mini-B USB connector. The same connector also can be used as a USB Host itself for connecting a USB Device such as a keyboard, mouse, etc. It supplies power to the device. Note: As the USB OTG port is a Mini-B connector, you will need a Mini-B to Type-A adapter to use it as a USB Host.

Accelerometer

The on-board ADXL345 accelerometer can be used to measure acceleration in three axes: x, y, and z. The accelerometer's function is defined by the program loaded into the microcontroller. Communication between the accelerometer and the microcontroller is performed via the I2C interface.

Flash Memory

The M25P80 Flash memory module enables the microcontroller to use an additional 8Mbits of Flash memory. It is connected to the microcontroller via the Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI).

RF Transceiver

mikromedia+ for Stellaris features an nRF24L01+ RF transceiver chip and a 2.4GHz active chip antenna. It is suitable for wireless operation in the worldwide ISM frequency band at 2.400 to 2.4835 GHz with air data rate up to 2Mbps. The chip is connected to the microcontroller via SPI.

Piezo Buzzer

The board is equipped with a piezo buzzer which can be used to create sound via PWM signal. Signal frequency determines the pitch of the sound, while the signal duty cycle can be used to increase or decrease the volume.

PIN Photodiode

The PIN photodiode is capable of converting light into voltage with high sensitivity and response speed. It is connected to an analog pin of the microcontroller. You can use this to have the system automatically adjust the screen backlight based on the ambient light level, for example.

IR Receiver

The IR receiver can be used for infra-red remote control of the board. The demodulated output signal from the IR module can be decoded by the microcontroller. Many existing data format standards are supported.

RGB LED

A multicolor LED is provided for you to implement a light indicator into your design. Each of the Red/Green/Blue channels is driven by a separate transistor.

Analog Temperature Sensor

The MCP9700A analog temperature sensor converts temperature to analog voltage. It is connected to an analog pin of the microcontroller. It can measure from -20C to +70C.

Software Examples

The included DVD-ROM contains example software, both as ready-to-load compiled code and as source code written in mikroC, mikroBASIC and mikroPascal. Demo versions of those compilers and of Visual TFT are included too.
