The mikromedia for dsPIC33 is a compact development system which provides a convenient platform for development of devices with multimedia content. The central part of the system is the 16-bit dsPIC33FJ256GP710A microcontroller that can be programmed via a USB bootloader, or with an external in-circuit programmer/debugger if you install headers on the provided pads. Two sets of programming header pads are available. One matches the pinout of the ICD2 Connector Board for using Microchip ICD2, ICD3 and compatible programmers; the other matches the pinout of the mikroProg-PIC programmer.

The mikromedia for dsPIC33 features integrated modules such as stereo MP3 codec, TFT 320240 touch screen display, USB connector, Flash memory, accelerometer and a microSD card connector.

This development system is powered by your PC via USB. Simply plug in the USB cable and the TFT display will turn on automatically. It also can be battery powered. An on-board MCP73832 battery charger will charge a Li-Polymer battery whenever the board is connected to USB.

The board measures 8 6 cm (3.14 2.36 inches). All unused microcontroller pins are available via pads along the sides of the board. These allow you to add on mikromedia shields (see options below), or to add this board to the mikromedia WorkStation.

dsPIC33FJ Multimedia Board Features

dsPIC33FJ256GP710A Microcontroller

This high-performance 16-bit microcontroller from Microchip is ideal for multimedia applications. Features include:
  • Up to 40 MIPS operation
  • 256KB of program memory
  • 30720 Bytes of RAM
  • 85 I/O pins
  • Internal Oscillator 7.37 MHz, 512kHz
  • CPU operating voltage 2V to 3.6V
  • nanoWatt features: Fast Wake, Fast Control
  • 2 UART, 2 SPI, 2 I2C, etc.
  • Max. I2C speed 400 kHz

Programming with bootloader

For programming the microcontroller, you can use a bootloader program which is pre-installed in the MCU memory. To transfer a .hex file from a PC to the MCU, you can use the free ds30 Loader application. The board has a mini-USB connector and ships with a cable to connect to your PC.

Programming with external programmer/debugger

In case you want to remove the USB bootloader, need to re-install it, or want to perform in-circuit debugging, the microcontroller can be programmed with an external dsPIC33 in-circuit programmer/debugger (not included). The board has two sets of pads for installing programming headers (two different pinouts).

LCD with Touch Screen

The development system features a TFT 320240 display with a resistive touch panel. What is displayed or can be entered via the touch panel depends on the program that you load into the microcontroller. Current consumption with backlight on is 59.7 mA (backlight consumption is 42 mA). The TFT display is capable of showing 262,000 different colors. A stylus is sold separately; see below.

Flash Memory Module

The M25P80 Flash memory module enables the microcontroller to use an additional 8Mbits of memory. It is connected to the microcontroller via the Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI). Max. serial Flash SPI speed is 16 MHz.

microSD Card Slot

There is a built-in microSD card slot for microSD cards on the development system (a microSD card is not included). It enables the system to expand available memory space. The Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI) is used for communication between the microcontroller and a microSD card. Max. microSD SPI speed is 16 MHz.

Audio Module

The mikromedia for dsPIC33 features a VS1053 which is capable of decoding MP3/WMA/AAC/eAAC+/Ogg Vorbis/WAV files from your MMC card. This module enables audio reproduction by using stereo headphones connected to the system via a 3.5mm connector. Volume as well as other functions of this module can be controlled by the microcontroller from within your software using the Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI). Max. audio codec SPI speed is 4 MHz.

USB Module

The development system can communicate with USB devices via the FT232RL USB-UART module. The board has a mini-USB connector.

Accelerometer

The ADXL345 accelerometer is used to measure acceleration, orientation, gravity, etc. The accelerometer's function is defined by the program that you load into the microcontroller. Communication between the accelerometer and the microcontroller is performed via the I2C interface.

Battery Charger

The development system also can be supplied with power via a Li-Polymer battery. A 2-pin connector is available for you to attach a battery. While a battery is connected, if you attach a USB cable connected to a PC, the on-board MCP73832 battery charger will start to charge the battery. Charging current value is ~250mA and charging voltage is 4.2V DC.

Additional Items on Board

  • Reset button on the LCD side useful if you put the board into an enclosure or install a shield, making only the LCD side accessible to the user
  • Pads for installing another reset button on the back side
  • Voltage regulator
  • Power and UART indicator LEDs (UART LED can be used for other purposes as well, e.g. signaling)
  • 32.768 kHz and 8 MHz crystal oscillators
  • Pads along the sides provide access to every unused microcontroller pin.

Software Examples

The code example ZIP file that you can download below contains the following example software, both as ready-to-load compiled code and as source code written in mikroC, mikroBASIC and mikroPascal. The source codes provide detailed explanatory comments.
  • Simple program that demonstrates the use of accelerometer. Measured x,y,z coordinates are sent to PC via USB-UART.
  • Simple battery charger demo.
  • Simple calculator demo for touchscreen.
  • Matrix code animation on TFT display.
  • Touch-controlled MP3 player on TFT display.
  • MMC/SD test for experimenting with read/write functions and observing results through USART terminal.
  • Test of MMC/SD functions for reading/writing MP3 files and observing results through USART terminal.
  • Demonstration of SerialFlash usage (chip erase, read Flash ID, read/write a byte, read/write an array).
  • Demonstration of game graphic interfaces. Use a touch-joypad to move a ball through a maze with obstacles.
  • Demonstration of displaying a JPG image on the TFT display.
  • A paint application demo. Choose between 11 colors and a pen or fill bucket tool.
  • Map application demo. Displays a world map. Touching continents opens up an information display.
