This AVR in-system debugger and programmer supports programming via the AVR ISP interface or in-circuit debugging/programming via the AVR JTAG or DebugWire interfaces. The unit is the 100% functional equivalent of the Atmel JTAGICE mkII and supports all chips supported by the AVR Studio software and Atmel's JTAGICE mk2.

The debugWIRE interface is used on smaller pin-count AVR chips and uses the Reset line for electrical connection; hence you do not have to sacrifice I/O capabilities to take full advantage of the On-Chip-Debug system.

The AVR JTAGICE mkII comes with a set of target cables that allow you to connect the unit to a 2x5 JTAG or 2x5 and 2x3 ISP or DebugWire interface. The AVR JTAGICE mkII can be connected to a PC either via USB or RS232. A power switch on the back of the unit allows for powering the unit on and off without having to disconnect it from the USB bus. Also included with the unit is a USB cable.

The JTAGICE mk2 is able to operate using an external power supply or it can be powered directly from the USB connector. An internal switch will default select the power from the external power supply. However if this is not connected, or the external power supply drops below a usable level the power will be taken from the USB (if connected). If the AVR ICE mkII is powered from the USB only, it's required that the USB can deliver minimum 500mA (Self Powered Hub). It's recommended to power up the target before the AVR ICE mkII is powered.

This unit does not ship with any software or documentation. Download the latest version of the AVR Studio IDE from the Atmel website. AVR Studio includes the necessary USB driver for this unit

JTAG, ISP and DebugWire Connections

The unit comes with a 2x5 (10-pin) ribbon cable attached, which is used for JTAG mode. Also included with the unit are two short cable adapters: a 2x5 male to female adapter for standard 2x5 (10-pin) ISP connections and a 2x5 male to 2x3 female adapter for 6-pin ISP connections. The ISP adapters are also used when working in DebugWire Mode. Do not connect the 2x5 ribbon cable that is attached to the JTAGICE directly to the target for ISP and DebugWire connections - those require the use of the included adapters.
