68HCS12 Programmer and Debugger Overview inDART-HCS12/D is a powerful entry-level tool for Motorola HCS12-based systems. This HC12 in-circuit debugger takes advantage of the Metrowerks HC12 CodeWarrior Integrated Development Environment (which groups an Editor, Assembler, C Compiler and Debugger) and the BDM (Background Debug Module) interface, which allows the download of the user application into the HC12 microcontroller's FLASH memory and to debug the program. Together with CodeWarrior, the 68HCS12 ISP programmer & debugger provides you with everything you need to write, compile, download, in-circuit emulate and debug HC(S)12 code. Full-speed program execution allows you to perform hardware and software testing in real time. The HCS12 inDART is connected to (and powered by) the host PC through a USB connection. A 6-pin BDM connector allows the HCS12 debugger/programmer to be connected to the target’s standard BDM connector. HCS12 Background Debug Module (BDM) All MCUs in the HCS12 family contain a single-wire background debug interface which supports in-circuit programming of on-chip non-volatile memory and sophisticated non-intrusive debug capabilities. This system does not interfere with normal application resources. It does not use any user memory or locations in the memory map and does not share any on-chip peripherals. The background debug module (BDM) uses a single-wire communication interface to allow non-intrusive access to target system memory and registers. inDART-HCS12 uses the standard, 6-pin BDM connector defined by Motorola to program and debug the target device. An additional 'Enhanced BDM' connector on the board features additional (optional) signals (MODA, MODB, ECLK, VSS) to extend the standard debugging capabilities. CodeWarrior Development Studio for HC12 Microcontrollers, Special Edition, includes the CodeWarrior integrated development environment (IDE); 12 KB code-size limited C compiler and C source-level debugger; macro assembler and Assembly-level debugger and FLASH programming support.
