The selection table below lists the 8051 emulator componentsthat are required to emulate a particular 8051 derivative and package. Some 8051 emulators are built from three modules: A Main Board, an exchangeable POD board and an exchangeable Package Adapter Boards. Those emulators have an entry/link in each column of the table below. You need to order at least one main board, POD board and package adapter to receive a complete 8051 emulator. Other emulators consist of a main board (base unit) and an exchangeable probecard (POD) thatincludes a specific package adapter. The POD ordering page usually gives you different package options to choose from. Those emulators have only an entry/link in the "main board" and "POD" columns in the table below. You need to order at least one base unit (main board) and POD to receive a complete 8051 emulator. Optional POD pin adapter boards are available to retrofit a probecard to work with another package. - Advantage of modular emulators:The same Main Board in combination with different PODs and package adapters can also be used to emulate any supported 8051 derivative from other manufacturers.
A third type of 8051 emulators combine main board, POD and package adapter onto a single board. This is called a dedicated emulator, as the "POD" is not exchangeable to support different 8051 derivatives. With those types of emulators you only need to order the component listed under the "main board" column to receive a complete 8051 emulator. The emulator ordering page usually gives you different package options to choose from, so if you only want to emulate a single package all you need to order is the emulator itself. If you want to emulate multiple packages, optional Pin Adapters can be used to convert from one package to another. - Advantage: Simplified ordering and lower cost
Emulation of SOIC or SSOP packages often requires an additional DIP-SOIC/SSOP adapter. How to use this selection guide: - Locate the manufacturer and part number of the 8051 microcontroller you want to emulate in the "Target MCU" column of the table below.
- In the row associated with your target MCU, click on the links for "Main boards", "POD" and "Package Adapter" to buy and/or to view a detailed description and the price of each module. Each separate row starting out in the "main board" column represents a valid emulator module combination.
